Biography

Charles Wreford-Brown is famous as having coined "soccer" as an abbreviation for "association football".

Born on 9th October 1866 in Bristol, he attended Charterhouse before coming up to Oxford. He played both cricket and football for the University, played county cricket for Gloucestershire and captained the England football team. A keen chess player, he entered the 1933 British Chess Championship but dropped out after two rounds because of illness.

Wreford-Brown was vice-president of the FA from 1941 until his death on 26th November 1951.
